De-matting Policy
Our De-matting Policy
All of the services at Percy's Parlour adhere to and go beyond The Animal Welfare Act 2006, which states that it is an offence to cause animals pain or discomfort. I therefore reserve the right to refuse to undertake any work I think may be detrimental to your pet’s wellbeing.
At Percy's Parlour, the welfare of the dog is paramount. I love dogs and would never wish to cause them any harm.
I appreciate it can be usual for even a dog with a very well-cared-for coat to have a few small knots and tangles, however, matting and felted matting are signs of neglect and can be very uncomfortable for your dog.
Matting prevents the skin from being able to breathe effectively and interferes with a dog's ability to regulate their own temperature. It may cause the following skin irritations and sores.
- Eye and Ear Infections
- Flea Infestation
- Fungal & Bacterial Infections
- Hot Spots & Sores
- Maggot Infestation
- Mites & Lice
- Moist Eczema
- Severe Itching
- Skin Rash
- Urine and Faeces Scalding
- Yeast Infections
I will therefore only ATTEMPT to de-matt a coat, where I feel the dog will not suffer any pain. I will NEVER attempt to de-matt an elderly or frail dog or an animal showing signs of aggression.
When a dog is presented to us with areas of matting, the owner will be asked to sign a disclaimer.
De-matting treatment
If the matting would take in excess of 15 minutes in total to gently comb out then it is then our policy to shave the whole coat using electric clippers with a close blade.
This is not a lazy option; this is an act of kindness – this will be discussed during your consultation.
The best way to prevent matting is a regular salon grooming regime with combing, brushing and bathing, in between full grooms.
If you require help and advice on preventing matting and caring for your dog's coat between grooming sessions, please do ask.
There will be additional Charges for de-matting of up to £10 for every 15 minutes of additional grooming time that is required to de-matt your dog. This is because the process is stressful for both the groomer and the dog, it is time-consuming, and causes additional wear and tear on the blades used which then require sharpening.
Thank you for your understanding.
